Apatite as a Semi-Precious Gemstone
Apatite is a semi-precious gemstone belonging to a group of calcium phosphate minerals, most commonly occurring as fluorapatite, chlorapatite and hydroxylapatite. With a hardness of 5 on the Mohs scale, it is softer than many traditional gemstones and should be handled with some care.
The mineral was named Apatite by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1786. Its name comes from the Greek word apatao, meaning “to deceive”, because Apatite was historically mistaken for other minerals due to its wide range of colours and appearances.
Apatite occurs naturally in shades of blue, teal, green, yellow, brown, purple, pink and colourless. Its vivid blue-green and teal varieties are especially popular in jewellery, often displaying bright ocean-like tones that can resemble Aquamarine and other blue gemstones.
