Malachite is a Semi-Precious Gemstone
Malachite is a striking semi-precious gemstone and a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂. It is instantly recognised by its vivid green colour and flowing natural bands, which can range from pale green to deep emerald tones.
Its dramatic patterns are completely natural, often forming waves, rings and layered bands that make every piece look different. The rich green colour comes from its high copper content.
Malachite measures around 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale, making it softer than many gemstones. It can still be used beautifully in jewellery, but it should be treated with a little more care to avoid scratches and surface damage.
Important deposits are found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, South Africa, Russia, Australia, Chile and the United States. With its unmistakable colour, bold patterns and long history, Malachite remains one of the most recognisable green stones in the world.
