Black Onyx as a Semi-Precious Gemstone
Black Onyx is a semi-precious gemstone and a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. It is admired for its deep black appearance, smooth texture and ability to take on a highly polished finish.
Throughout history, Onyx has been used in jewellery, seals, carvings, ornaments and decorative objects. The Romans especially valued it for engraved seals and cameos, where its fine structure allowed intricate details to be carved into the stone.
The name Onyx comes from the Greek word meaning “claw” or “fingernail”. True Onyx belongs to the Quartz / Chalcedony family and should not be confused with onyx marble, which is a different and much softer material.
With a hardness of approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Black Onyx is relatively durable and well suited for everyday jewellery.
